Psi Chi SDSU

What is Psi Chi?

Psi Chi is the national honors society in psychology. Our club strives to provide information, lectures, social events, and networking opportunities in the psychology department for our members.

 

PSI CHI was established nationally in 1929. The local chapter was formed in 1950. The San Diego State University Chapter of Psi Chi is dedicated to promoting student awareness and interest in the field of psychology. Psi Chi provides members with scholarship opportunities and undergraduate/graduate research award competitions.  

 

Purpose Statement

Psi Chi is an international honor society whose purpose shall be to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.

 

Mission Statement

The mission of Psi Chi is to produce a well-educated, ethical, and socially responsible member committed to contributing to the science and profession of psychology and to society in general.

 

In pursuit of our mission we will:

 

- Advance the science and profession of psychology.

- Promote an educational experience consistent with the mission.

- Promote ethical and socially responsible members and leaders.

- Define and establish an organizational structure that promotes our mission.

- Recognize and foster the contributions that diversity makes to the science and practice of psychology.

 

How do I join?

Membership in Psi Chi is open to students who are majoring or minoring in psychology, and attend an institution where a chapter is located. Qualified candidates include those of any age, sex, sexual orientation, race, handicap or disability, color, religion, national and ethnic origin, and who meet the minimum qualifications.

 

The deadline to turn in both Psi Chi International's online application and SDSU Psi Chi's paper application for the Spring 2025 semester is March 21st, 2025. 

 

Requirements for Membership 

Undergraduate Applicants

 

- Be enrolled as a major or minor in a psychology program (or a program psychological in nature); pre-major status           does not qualify

- Have completed at least 3 semesters (or equivalent) of college courses

- Have completed at least 9 units of psychology courses at SDSU; transfer students are not eligible in their first semester at SDSU

- Have earned an overall GPA that is in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship (minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale)

- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA in psychology courses

 

Graduate Student Applicants

 

- Be enrolled in a psychology graduate program

- Have completed at least one full semester of graduate coursework

- Have an overall GPA of at least 3.00 in all graduate courses, including psychology courses

 

Transfer Student Applicants

 

- Follow the same requirements as the undergraduate student applicant

-Transfer student applicants who are already members of Psi Chi contact the Psi Chi faculty advisor at the new institution to complete an online transfer membership form

 

Process

Applications are available under the "Applications" tab. In addition to the application, please email an officer a copy of your DARS and a check/Venmo for $80 during meeting times on Wednesdays, 4-5 pm located in the Legacy Suite on the 3rd floor of the Student Union.  Prospective members must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.0 in psychology courses.

If you are unsure of whether you meet Psi Chi requirements, bring a copy of your DARS to either Ingrid's or Rubi's office hours.

When are the meetings?

Our meetings for the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters are on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00 P.M.

 

What is the Psi Chi Initiation Ceremony?

The Psi Chi initiation ceremony is an intimate gathering of friends, family, and faculty to celebrate the academic accomplishment of the recently initiated Psi Chi members! The date of Psi Chi Initiation for Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 will be at a to-be-determined date next fall. 

Applications are due by March 21st, 2025.
